Food Chains and Food Webs- Energy Transfer
Food Chain- A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy.
Here are sample food chains from different biomes. Every consumer is labeled either primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary depending on what order they came in the food chain after the producer had been eaten.
Here is a food web. It contains many more possibilities than the food chain and shows how each animal in a given ecosystem is connected by energy flow.
Lastly, here is an example of an energy pyramid. It shows that each consumer only receives one-tenth of the energy from the animal below it. This is why we need many more producers and primary consumers (herbivores) than tertiary consumers (really good predators).
